En el invierno de 1996, el escritor y editor Michael Krüger envió a cuarenta y seis escritores de diferentes países un número igual de dibujos del gran ilustrador alemán Quint Buchholz. Los dibujos tenían un tema común: el libro. El resultado es este volumen, poco habitual, en el que son los escritores los que ilustran las imágenes. Y los narradores que se prestaron a esta original propuesta son, además, algunos de los mejores del mundo: John Berger, Jostein Gaarder, Milan Kundera, Herta Müller, Orhan Pamuk, W. G. Sebald, Susan Sontag o Charles Simic, entre otros muchos. También hay nueve escritores españoles, y son también magníficos: José Agustín Goytisolo, Javier Marías, Juan Marsé, Carmen Martín Gaite, Gustavo Martín Garzo, Ana María Matute, Eduardo Mendoza, Anna Maria Mox y Javier Tomeo.
